Compound semiconductors end up in defence and commercial systems where failure is not an option, and very few UK sites can manufacture them at volume. This is one of them, backed by a long-term investment plan and set up to grow.

Company mission

A UK compound semiconductor manufacturer producing devices for defence and commercial applications.

Role Overview

You will join a team of multi-skilled technicians keeping cleanroom manufacturing equipment running during production hours. The work splits between planned maintenance, breakdown response and supporting process engineers when tool behaviour starts to affect the product.

Salary: £45,000

What You'll Own

Maintenance and Breakdowns

  • Preventative maintenance on high-value semiconductor manufacturing tools against a set schedule
  • First response to breakdowns, fault finding across electrical, electronic and mechanical systems to get tools back into production
  • Working with equipment vendors on complex repairs, including remote support, and turning that into action plans for the team
  • Finding second-source spares where they offer a better cost

Process and Improvement

  • Supporting process engineering when equipment variation shifts process conditions
  • Identifying and implementing tool improvements that lift uptime, yield and throughput
  • Taking part in 8D investigations after major equipment events
  • Contributing to equipment KPIs including availability, MTBF and MTTR

Safety and Knowledge Sharing

  • Working to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Writing method statements and risk assessments, and applying COSHH
  • Training and assessing technicians and apprentices, and passing on what you pick up from vendor courses
  • Covering more than one equipment area when the workload needs it

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Time served engineering apprenticeship plus at least three years' experience since
  • Background in a high volume manufacturing environment
  • Proven electrical, electronic and mechanical fault finding
  • Understanding of PLC and software based control systems
  • Working knowledge of COSHH, method statements and risk assessments
  • Able to train and assess others in a technical setting
  • ONC or equivalent engineering qualification
  • Comfortable working without direct supervision

Useful

  • Experience with structured problem solving such as 8D
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or OHSAS 18001 environments
  • Experience liaising directly with equipment vendors on repairs
